Sitting here drinking my morning coffee and taking in these indescribable views of Oia, Greece... I can't help but giggle about the past few weeks.
From possibly the busiest schedule in my working year, I found myself on a plane flying to compete in Abu Dhabi in the 911 Firefighter Challenge.
With Fire shifts covered, hockey skills prepped, Fit by Fire programs ready for the weeks ahead, I was ready to mentally engage for my own physical endeavours.
At the end of the week, I found myself PR'ing in Female Individual by :11 seconds from 2014! I was Stoked with the 1st place result but more importantly, improving my own performance. My Tandem partners were amazing as well, as we achieved 1st place in both female tandem and Co-Ed tandem.
Female Tandem was a new category this year which found some new girls joining the sport which was fantastic to see! More women taking their physical fitness to new levels and challenging themselves with a new sport.
I thank Jackie Palmer and Trevor Fera for racing with me and making Day 2 so fun and unforgettable!
I mentioned at the start of this blog, I was giggling... I say this because of my past year and suffering a serious injury. I Never thought I would be back to where I was 2 years ago, or if I would ever be given this opportunity again.
This quote popped up in one of my reading a while ago, and has stuck with me... Let me share with you!

For me, I wanted to Return to Abu Dhabi, and race in the 2016 event. That was a long term goal of mine since 2014. And when I accomplished this, I couldn't help but giggle, as reflecting on the road blocks I went through and how persistence truly does pay off!
For you today... I challenge you to Create a Long Term Physical Goal for Yourself.
Something that may seem far away, but something that is important to you and your physical health. As you work on short term goals, this goal is always tied in. It will be your dance floor!

(Yes, we are shift workers who have the extra demands of limited sleep and the stresses of shift work)
BUT have you ever thought of the idea that it could be Meal timing or limited/poor food choices?!?
Why Do we feel these mood/energy changes while on shift? (I know when I'm on holidays or away from the station, I don't typically feel like this...)
My Answer to this is:
Meal Timing, Food Choices, Home Cooking, Fresh Non Preservative foods available, ETC.
Of course You can Eat these foods! BUT.... (there's always a BUT) They need to FIT into your daily Macro (Macronutrient) assignments.
I have worked with various athletes, Emergency service workers, nurses, teachers, etc for years. I started focusing in on nutrition while I was in University, playing hockey for The Ohio State Buckeyes - D1 level...
and you ask.... Why?
I ALWAYS felt exhausted both physically and mentally. Yes, we skated and worked out a TON! But we didn't always EAT a TON to fuel ourselves for these DEMANDS.
Going from The Rink to Classes to the Weight Room was busy to start with. Then adding in flights, hotel rooms, bus rides, homework, tests, game stresses, video sessions, family and friend time and more... Didn't always allow healthy FUEL choices regularly.
Back in 2003, I FELT like a SHIFT WORKER!
Nutrition became fascinating to me... I wanted to learn and understand the science behind it, listen to what "the professionals" were saying, try various techniques on my own body as I continued to live the ATHLETE/SHIFT WORKER lifestyle.
Years later, I become a Firefighter who continues to LEARN DAILY about nutrition and our bodies. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I KNOW EVERYTHING to do with Nutrition. I'm also not going to lie and say there is one perfect way for everyone to follow from a food stand point.
We are ALL so so so very Different!
This is What's Challenging... and What I Find EXTREMELY fascinating! I want to HELP all my clients reach their GOALS, both physically and mentally. I would love for everyone to Win a GOLD medal in their sport/activity Or to Achieve a PB every time they perform... Or to just Feel great during their Shift!
However, this as we know isn't the case always. Life has it's ways to teach us failure, accomplish successes, give us set backs, challenge us with obstacles, Let us have hopes, All for What?!?
Whatever Your goals are, I want to help you figure out what WORKS FOR YOU!
Back to Nutriton....
Eating Foods at the right time, having the proper amount of Proteins, Fats and Carbs for your personal lifestyle/body type is what I recommend you learn. Food intake shouldn't be complicated...
Your bodies Caloric Intake needs to = DEMANDS.
